achymetry is a painless examination that allows measuring the thickness of the cornea. The patchometer is a probe that is gently placed on the front of the eye (the cornea) and measures its thickness. Pachymetry can help its diagnosis, as corneal thickness can influence readings of its eye pressure. With this measure, the doctor can better understand your reading of intraocular pressure and develop a treatment plan that is suitable for you.
The procedure takes only one minute to measure the two eyes. Pachymetry can be ultrasonic, which requires contact between the measurement probe and the cornea, and is based on the same foundation as ultrasonic biometry. There are also optical biometric techniques, in which the distance between the reflexes caused on the anterior and posterior surfaces of the cornea is measured by using a beam of light. Corneal pachymetry is fundamental in the assessment of the degree of hydration of the cornea and in the diagnosis and quantification of corneal edema. It is also essential in the preoperative evaluation of surgery that requires thinning or implanting artificial bodies inside the cornea, such as corneal refractive surgery, implanting intracorneal segments, etc.
