During an endoscopy, the doctor uses a thin and flexible tube (endoscope) with a light at the end to observe structures within the body. Special tools are passed through the tube to take a small sample of tissue that will be analyzed. The type of endoscopic biopsy that is carried out depends on the location of the suspicious area.
The tubes used in an endoscopic biopsy can be inserted into the mouth, rectum, urinary tracts or through a small incision into the skin. Examples of endoscopy biopsy procedures include cystoscopy to extract tissue from the bladder, bronchoscopy to extract tissue from the lung and colonoscopy to extract tissue from the inside of the colon.
