The effort test or ergometry is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that assesses the heart’s response to a progressive physical exercise. The objective is that the effort reveals symptoms or electrocardiographic alterations that are not observed at rest.
In sports medicine, stress tests are indicated with the following objectives: physical fitness assessment, training programming guide, training effects control, excessive training detection assistance.
It requires the patient to be equipped with comfortable sportswear, and appropriate footwear (sport shoes) to walk, run or pedal. Water bottle and towel is recommended.
The stress test will be done by static bicycle (cyclergometer) or tape / rolling tapestry, it will last approximately 30-40 minutes, including the preparation time and the time it takes to perform the test itself. The duration of the ergometry will depend on the physical condition of the patient, but it will be approximately 15-20 minutes.
During the test, the patient explains how he feels (fatigation, tiredness, chest pain, palpitations, dyspnea, etc.), the ECG is continuously recorded and his blood pressure is periodically taken. The test is considered conclusive when the patient has reached 85% of the maximum heart rate due to their age.
In cardiology, the test is used to detect obstructions in the arteries, gives information on how blood pressure responds, if changes in the heart rhythm appear during exercise, and the physical capacity of the person. This is very useful for the diagnosis and prognosis of other heart diseases, such as arterial hypertension, myocardiopathies or congenital heart disease.
